Why is my German Shepherd growling at me?

A German Shepherd’s instinct is to defend its home or family. That is why whenever they see any stranger, they often bark at them and alert their family members. They warn them by barking at people even when they are not near their house or yard.

It should be your last choice, and you should also contact the vet or the professional trainer about using these tools. But it is advised to use the positive method first instead of negative punishment.

It may sound unreasonable, but you should teach your dog to “speak” first before teaching them to “quiet” commands. 

Here are the ways through which you can teach them-

• Allow them to bark first, and then stand in front of them and distract them from barking with the rewards. You can give them a treat, put it on their nose, and let them smell it.

• When the dog stop barking and sniff the treat, you should give them the “speak” command.

• Appreciate them and give them the treat. It would be best if you repeated it until it started barking when you spoke.

• After that, you should take them to the distraction-free environment, give them the command to speak, and then shove a treat in their face and say, “quiet.” Once they are calm, you can give them rewards.
